Background of the Study
Yoruba folk songs are a rich repository of Nigeria’s cultural heritage, where traditional musicality and language intertwine. Phonetics in these songs—particularly in aspects such as intonation, rhythm, and vowel quality—are deeply influenced by cultural practices, oral traditions, and communal storytelling (Adekunle, 2023). This study examines how cultural influences shape the phonetic features of Yoruba folk songs, highlighting the interplay between traditional aesthetics and linguistic expression. By analyzing recordings of folk songs performed in various settings, the research investigates how specific phonetic traits are maintained or adapted over time. These traits not only reflect the historical and social context of the Yoruba people but also contribute to the preservation of cultural identity. Furthermore, the study explores how modern influences, such as digital media and cross-cultural interactions, are impacting traditional phonetic practices. Utilizing acoustic analysis and ethnographic methods, the research aims to document these changes and understand their implications for both language preservation and cultural continuity (Olusola, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the cultural significance of Yoruba folk songs, there is limited research on how cultural influences affect their phonetic properties. Traditional phonetic patterns, which are essential for preserving cultural identity, are at risk of being altered by modern influences and globalization (Adekunle, 2023). The lack of systematic documentation of these phonetic changes hinders efforts to preserve the authentic sound of Yoruba oral traditions. Moreover, variations in performance styles across different communities complicate the standardization of these phonetic features (Olusola, 2024). This study addresses these issues by examining the effect of cultural influences on the phonetics of Yoruba folk songs, thereby providing a basis for preserving linguistic heritage in a rapidly changing environment.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To document the phonetic features of Yoruba folk songs.

  2. To analyze the influence of cultural practices on these phonetic traits.

  3. To assess the impact of modern influences on traditional Yoruba phonetics.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the key phonetic features present in Yoruba folk songs?

  2. How do cultural practices shape these phonetic traits?

  3. What effects do modern influences have on traditional phonetic patterns?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of cultural influences on the phonetics of Yoruba folk songs, contributing to the preservation of Nigeria’s oral heritage. The research offers insights into how traditional phonetic features can be maintained in the face of modernization, providing valuable data for linguists, cultural historians, and educators. The findings will help inform strategies for cultural preservation and enhance understanding of the relationship between language and tradition (Olusola, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the phonetic features of Yoruba folk songs and does not include other musical genres or languages. Data are based on selected recordings from specific communities.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Phonetics: The study of speech sounds and their production.

  • Folk Songs: Traditional songs that express cultural heritage.

  • Cultural Influences: The impact of traditions, practices, and social norms on language use.
